I would like to introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. Which was long, long ago! At the moment, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I didn't like Emperor Claudius, and I was not the only person! A great deal of people shared my feelings.
Claudius wanted to have a huge army. He expected men to offer to join. A lot of men just did not need to fight in battles. They did not desire to keep their wives and families. As you might have guessed, not many men signed-up. That made Claudius mad. So what happened? He had a ridiculous idea. He thought when men were not married, they'd not mind joining the military. So Claudius do not let anymore marriages. Young adults believed his new law was harsh. I thought it had been crazy! I truly was not planning to support that law!
Did I mention that I was a priest? One of my favorite actions was to marry couples. I continued performing marriages -- privately, of-course, even after Emperor Claudius handed his law. It had been really quite exciting. Imagine a little candle-lit room with only the bride and groom and myself. We'd say the words of the ceremony, hearing even while for the actions of soldiers.
One evening, we did hear footsteps. It was frightening! Thank goodness the pair I was marrying escaped over time. To get other viewpoints, consider taking a gander at:
save on. I used to be caught. (Not exactly as light on my feet as I applied to be, I guess.) I was placed in prison and told that my punishment was death.
I tried to remain content. And do you know what? Great things happened. Many teenagers found the jail to go to me. They threw flowers and notes around my window. They wanted me to understand that they, also, believed in-love.
One of these simple teenagers was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father helped her to visit me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits up. She agreed that used to do the best thing by ignoring the Emperor and going forward with the secret marriages. Visiting

I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. It had been published on your day I died, February 1-4, 269 A.D.
Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most of all, they think of love and friendship. And when they consider Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh -- because they realize that love can not be defeated!.
