.bmp (basically because they provided a better vehicle for conversion) images simply because the extension is hardcoded in DiscussionForumHead and DiscussionForumOverview. No technical reason, feel free to extend.
Example: If you have a category named Projects the image you upload here must have the filename Projects.bmp
